JOPLIN, Missouri -- Jasper County sheriff's deputies have located two suspects wanted in the early morning police pursuit in Joplin.
Keith Wald, 34, of Joplin, and Nathan Felton, 22 of Neosho, were taken into custody at a residence outside the city. The truck and trailer that had been involved in the pursuit were recovered by police earlier today inside city limits. The trailer was determined to have been stolen overnight in Joplin, according to police.
The two men are suspected of throwing explosive devices out of the window of their vehicle early Monday morning.
Police said in a news release that they stopped a truck pulling a trailer at Fourth Street and Sergeant Avenue at about 3:30 a.m. today for not having its trailer lights on. As an officer exited his vehicle, an occupant of the truck threw an explosive device out of the window that immediately exploded, police said. The truck then drove away.
Officers followed the vehicle to E Street and Sergeant Avenue, where an occupant threw a second explosive device out of the window. As the pursuit of the truck continued, a Joplin police car lost control, ran off the road and hit a tree at Lone Elm and Surrey streets.
Joplin police lost sight of the truck on Highway 400 in Cherokee County, Kansas. No officers were hurt by the explosions, and the officer who was involved in the crash declined medical treatment, the department said.
